英语学术书评中的评价：一项基于语料库的研究

【摘要】： 本文采取定量统计和定性分析的方法研究英语学术书评中评价性语言在语义、词汇语法模式和语用策略三个层面是如何实现的。本研究的出发点是评价意义是语言的一个重要特点,尤其在学术书评这样一个评价性语言高度集中的语类。 本文试图从价值论和语言交际的视角定义评价,将评价看作是“评价者(评价主体)在具体语境中根据一定的评价依据对被评价者(评价客体)做出的价值判断”,整个过程能反映出潜伏在某一团体背后的价值观念或标准。本文认为评价的语言表达是意义、形式和策略的统一体,并据此在整合前人研究成果基础上提出了分析学术书评中评价性语言的理论框架,即,在语篇语义、词汇语法模式和语用策略三个层面上对书评中的评价做全面深入的探讨。 在研究方法上,本文从语言学网站the Linguist List通过分层随机抽样得到了200篇学术书评(分别为100名男性和女性书评作者所写)作为自建语料库,采取基于语料库的研究方法借助一系列工具对学术书评中的评价性语言做上述三个层面上的探讨。具体说来,作者用Collins Cobuild 3.1.0来识别语篇中评价意义不明显或不易确定的评价性词语,用CorpusTool 1.1来对语料库中评价意义的参数范畴和力度调节系统以及表达评价时的语用策略进行标注和某些统计工作,并采用AntConc 3.2.0提取语料库中包含某些句法模式的索引行。 研究结果发现,书评作者所表达的评价意义在范畴上可以大致归为五个评价参数:情感性(Emotivity),预期性(Expectedness),可能性/必要性(Possibility/Necessity),可靠性(Reliability)和风格(Style)。情感性是作为最基本的参数是从评价理论的态度系统简化而来,分为感情,评判和鉴赏,但感情和评判因为在语料库中出现频率较低而不再细分,鉴赏则细分为反应(Reaction),可理解性(Comprehensibility),结构(Structure)和价值(Valuation)。这些评价参数可以由调节系统(Modification System)(由评价理论的级差系统简化而来)来强化或弱化评价力度。统计结果表明强化调节语大多修饰肯定性评价而弱化调节语一般修饰否定性评价,这可能与书评作者对原书作者面子需求的考虑有关。另外,通过对不同性别作者的书评中评价进行对比考察,作者发现这两类书评中并不存在显著的表达差异。这两类书评中出现的肯定性评价与否定性评价以及强化肯定性评价与弱化否定性评价的比例基本相当,说明性别差异在学术书评这一比较客观的语类里对语言的主观性影响并不明显。在词汇语法层面上,作者发现书评作者灵活选用多种词性的评价词来表达评价意义,并识别了学术书评中承载评价意义的较为常见的11种句法模式及其可能性变异产生的子模式,并从评价的局部语法视角出发对它们进行了例子化分析和阐释。在语用层面上,研究发现书评作者通常采取礼貌策略和客观性策略来满足复杂的人际需求并使得自己的评价有说服力而易于被读者接受。 本研究揭示了一些重要方面并产生了一些实际启示。关于评价参数的归类描述有助于我们发现隐藏在学术团体背后的价值体系,这是研究者在学术写作和交际中应该遵循的;所识别出的表达评价意义的基本词汇及句法模式对于学术书评的教学和习得有一定的指导性;对评价表达中的语用策略的探讨对写好书评乃至进行成功的学术交流有着同等重要的意义。但是,由于评价本身的复杂性,再加上本研究所选语料的局限性以及理论框架不可避免的某些主观性,关于评价的研究还需要进一步完善和补充。
