【摘要】：当前,随着中国的日益强大并在国际上获得更多的话语权,外国学者对中国的研究以及汉学著作的出版方兴未艾,但译文质量却参差不齐。《追寻现代中国》是美国历史学会主席、世界著名汉学家史景迁的代表作品。史景迁以研究中国历史见长,他以西方史学家独特的视角和取材观察悠久的中国历史,以“讲故事”的方式向读者介绍了他的观察和研究结果,行文叙述生动,兼顾了学术性和可读性,已成为美国大学中国研究的权威著作,相应的中译本也引起了广泛关注。功能翻译目的论作为德国功能学派的主要理论发展于20世纪70年代,认为翻译是人类的一种有特定目的的行为活动。翻译时,译者根据委托人的要求,结合翻译目的和译文读者的情况,从原作所提供的多源信息中进行选择性翻译。同时翻译发生在一定的文化背景下。翻译过程中目的法则是首要原则,翻译行为由目的决定；此外还必须遵循连贯法则和忠实法则,忠实法则服从连贯法则,连贯法则又服从目的法则,目的法则为翻译的最高法则,决定了翻译的策略和方法,即译者应该根据不同的翻译目的而采取相应的翻译策略。目的论已被广泛运用于不同类型文本翻译的分析,体现了目的论在翻译标准多元化、翻译策略灵活化和译者主观能动性方面的优势。笔者选取目前最受认可与推崇的温洽溢译本,评析了《追寻现代中国》的第一部分“最后的王朝”,讲述了自十六世纪末期的晚明至二十世纪初期大清帝国的瓦解。本文从功能翻译目的论的角度出发,从四方面评析温洽溢在翻译过程中根据翻译目的相应采取的翻译策略,探讨目的论三法则的可行性以及译文对其的遵守程度,赏析译文如何很好地兼顾学术性和可读性,指出需商榷和改进之处,探求并论证翻译目的论对国外汉学研究作品中译规范化的指导意义,为翻译策略的选择提供参考借鉴,旨在帮助提高整体的译文质量。
