爱默生之超验主义与印度教

　　十九世纪发生在康考德以爱默生为核心的超验主义运动,在某种程度上,是东方的种子(古印度思想)在西方的土壤中结出的果实。它的形成不仅带来了美国文学的第一次繁荣—-“美国的文艺复兴”,而且影响深远,时至今日仍然余音袅袅,不绝如缕。 以爱默生为代表人物的超验主义,由于受到英国浪漫主义、以及康德唯心主义等思想的影响,在宗教上反对加尔文教的宿命论,哲学上否定知识起源于感觉经验,崇尚精神直觉,反对迷信教条,表现在文学创作上,则反对模仿欧洲,反对拾人牙慧。超验主义俱乐部从整体上看,似乎缺乏某种统一的纲领,但毫无疑问,他们都尚真、主情、重直觉和想象。超验主义这一主旋律在爱默生第一次欧游结束回程的船上,从其日记中看很可能已经成形了:“人的心灵深处具有自我主宰所需的一切。发生在他身上的这一切,无论善恶,都只能是他的自我流露。世上万事万物和人的心灵息息相通、遥遥呼应;万物之灵无不渗透人的内心,人们不应向外索取。生活的目的似乎就在人的认识自我。上帝在各自的心里,这才是真理的最高体现。”所以,他把开启人的心智唤醒人们精神独立作为自己的首要使命。而这也恰好和古印度宗教哲学思想的启示相吻合。 据研究,爱默生在青少年时...
