[Abstract]:With the rise of China, Chinese and Western media have created different Chinese images, which has led to the study of the Chinese image created by the media. This study is based on Kenneth Burke's five-cause criticism of drama and quantitative and qualitative analysis to study the Chinese and Western media coverage of the Shanghai World Expo. The purpose of this study is to compare the Chinese image created by Chinese and Western media reports, and to explore the motive of the image. The corpus is China Daily and Global Times. The New York Times of the United States and the Daily Telegraph of the United Kingdom, five each. The present study carries on the drama five-cause criticism to the corpus, finds out the character, the action, the scene, the purpose, the means in each semantic group, and determines the two prominent factors in the semantic group and their relation ratio. From the contrast of the prominent factors and the relationship ratio, we find that the Chinese media shape an ambitious, modest and civilized Chinese people; the Western media portray an autocratic, hypocritical and uncivilized Chinese people. Chinese and Western media have different philosophical motives in shaping different Chinese images. One aspect of the speaker's motivation is to find a scapegoat for sin in order to achieve perfection. In the process of portraying Chinese image in Chinese and western media, they are also seeking their scapegoats. The rise of China is a recognized fact. For China, ranking first in international status is its pursuit of perfection ("ranking first" is not equivalent to "dominating the world"). In order to approach or achieve this "perfection", the "scapegoat" sought by China is to vigorously publicize the better side of China and leave a good impression on the international community by omitting the bad side. The perfection of the Western countries is to maintain or further enhance their international status. The "scapegoat" they are looking for is to denigrate the Chinese Government and the Chinese people, to portray China as a world eager to dominate, to disrespect human rights, and to destroy the environment. Waste of resources, hypocritical country, and the Chinese people are a group of poor overall quality.
