[Abstract]:John Banville's "Sea" 2005 is a novel about love, memory, and the search for "self." the article explores the narrator Max's quest for ethical identity. On this basis, from the background of the relationship between human society and natural environment, this paper analyzes the reconstruction process of Max's ethical identity. In his novel, Banville explores a broader moral proposition. That is, how to achieve redemption through the memory of the dead, and thus form a new ethical relationship with the living. The mourning for An Na, twins Chloe and Meles is the ethical concern for the dead. In this process, the repeated questioning about the ethical responsibility of the self to the other is the process of the division, the continuous deconstruction and construction of the flowing self, and the constant examination of the relationship between the self and the other in mourning. It is not only the trend of Max's personal spirit to continue or redefine, but also to recognize the limitation of the reappearance of reality and the mobility and contradiction of ethical identity. It is also the reflection of individualism in the western thought tradition.
