转变、重塑与毁灭：《掘墓人的女儿》中父亲形象的研究

【摘要】：《掘墓人的女儿》是乔伊斯·卡罗尔·欧茨的心理现实主义代表作,小说的主人公“掘墓人的女儿”丽贝卡·艾丝特·施瓦特是一位出生于美国的德国犹太裔女性。小说以女主人公的视角述说其脑海中的一幕幕往事。主人公与父亲雅各布·施瓦特的关系是一条贯穿全文的潜在主线。在欧茨的诸多作品中,父亲缺席的在场屡见不鲜,可“父亲”依然是推动小说情节发展的关键人物,这种设定与作者自身家庭中父亲角色的缺失密切相关。近年来,虽有部分学者聚焦于欧茨笔下的男性形象的研究,但鲜有学者着眼于父亲形象的研究。本文以“掘墓人”的父亲形象为切入点,依据欧茨的创作本意——反思遭受种族歧视和社会排斥戕害的美籍犹太族裔的犹太性,按照时间顺序将犹太父亲转变、重塑、毁灭的三种状态与其丧失原身份、追寻新身份、重建身份失败的三个阶段一一对应,深入剖析他陷入身份危机的过程,重点论述最终使他身心双重崩溃的内外因,探讨小说中父亲的在场与缺席,以及他对女儿人生所产生的影响,得出这位犹太父亲不单是一个负面形象,其也有积极的一面,进而指出“父亲”这一人物在小说中的重要性。
[Abstract]:The daughter of the gravedigger is Joyce Carol Oates' masterpiece of psychological realism. The protagonist of the novel, Rebecca Esther Swat, is a German Jewish woman born in the United States. The novel tells the scenes in her mind from the perspective of the heroine. The relationship between the protagonist and his father, Jacob Schwartz, is a potential thread throughout the thesis. In many of Oates' works, the absence of father is common, but "Father" is still the key character to promote the development of the novel, which is closely related to the absence of the father's role in the author's own family. In recent years, although some scholars have focused on the male image of Oates, few scholars have focused on the father image. Based on the father image of the gravedigger, this paper reflects on the Jewish character of American Jewish people who have suffered from racial discrimination and social exclusion, and transforms and rebuilds the Jewish father according to the original intention of Oates. The three states of destruction correspond to the three stages of his loss of his original identity, the pursuit of new identity, the failure of rebuilding his identity, the in-depth analysis of the process in which he falls into an identity crisis, and the emphasis on the internal and external causes that ultimately cause him to collapse both physically and mentally. By discussing the presence and absence of the father in the novel and his influence on his daughter's life, it is concluded that the Jewish father is not only a negative image, but also has a positive side, and points out the importance of the character "Father" in the novel.
