[Abstract]:Philip Ross's "deserve" tells the story of a fictional polio plague that erupted in Newark in 1944. Critics tend to focus on the Oedipus tragedy of the protagonist, Conte, but ignore the character Mensnikov, who is both a narrator and a interlocutor. This paper regards the dialogue and interaction between Conte and Mensnikov as an act of confession and testimony. The fact that Conte fled, the attitude of repentance and the act of atonement by asceticism constituted his repentance and embodied the "caring for himself" ethic embodied in extreme situations such as individual's face to disease and death. Mensnikov, as witness of Conte's fate, participated in his repentance, moral judgment and redemption. At the same time, readers become bystanders and witnesses of the polio plague described in the novel through rational and empathic reading. The author's confession and testimony also reflect his concern for the Holocaust and his humanistic concern for the fate of the individual.
