多克托罗《拉格泰姆时代》和《霍默与兰利》中“垃圾”意象的研究

【摘要】:20世纪以来,随着消费主义的兴起,城市垃圾问题变得越来越突出,这不仅引起了一批生态学家的关注,同样也成为一些当代美国作家的关注焦点。其中,较广为人知的作家包括唐·德里罗,托马斯·品钦,以及因擅长“书写历史”著称的埃德加·劳伦斯·多克托罗。他们在作品中因探讨垃圾和人的生存问题而备受评论界的关注。从垃圾的源头——消费主义和消费社会出发,本文将探讨在后现代消费社会中存在的异化现象以及垃圾对社会和人造成的影响。通过分析多克托罗小说《拉格泰姆时代》中两位艺术家的对垃圾进行艺术改造的尝试,本文剖析了艺术作为一种救赎力量,可以构成对抗消费主义现实的反叙事,从而艺术的乌托邦也具有了现实的可能性。通过对多克托罗小说《霍默与兰利》中“囤积症”和“隐居”两种“怪异”行为的解读,本文揭示了在晚期资本主义社会,消费主义更加盛行的时代,艺术家的改造的力量已开始被削弱,垃圾也因此成为了死亡的象征物。通过两部作品中“垃圾”意象的对比,不难发现,在当代消费社会的背景下,艺术对消费社会的废弃之物——垃圾进行改造,表明了艺术具有一定的救赎力量,但在当代物符漂浮的世界里这种力量已经被逐渐削弱。本文在两部作品中对“垃圾”意象的不同解读,有助于揭示消费社会中由于过度消费而导致的人的异化的存在,也为研究多克托罗作品乃至20世纪美国历史提供新的通道。
[Abstract]:Since the 20th century, with the rise of consumerism, the problem of urban garbage has become more and more prominent, which has not only attracted the attention of a group of ecologists, but also become the focus of some contemporary American writers. Among the better known writers are Don Delillo, Thomas Pinchin, and Edgar Lawrence Doctorow, who is known for his "writing history." They have received critical attention in their works for exploring garbage and the survival of human beings. Starting from the source of garbage-consumerism and consumer society, this paper will discuss the phenomenon of alienation existing in the postmodern consumer society and the influence of garbage on society and people. By analyzing the attempt of two artists in Doctorow's novel "Lagertam era" to reform the garbage, this paper analyzes that art, as a kind of redemption force, can constitute a counter-narrative against the reality of consumerism. Thus the Utopia of art also has the realistic possibility. Through the interpretation of "hoarding" and "seclusion" in Doctorow's novel Homer and Langley, this paper reveals that consumerism was more prevalent in the late capitalist society. The artist's power of transformation has begun to weaken, and garbage has become a symbol of death. Through the comparison of the images of "garbage" in the two works, it is not difficult to find that under the background of the contemporary consumer society, art has transformed the discarded objects of the consumer society-garbage, which shows that art has a certain power of redemption. But in a modern world of floating charms, this power has been gradually weakened. The different interpretation of "garbage" image in the two works is helpful to reveal the existence of human alienation caused by excessive consumption in the consumer society, and to provide a new channel for the study of Doctorow works and American history in the 20th century.
