[Abstract]:9 / 11 not only has a profound impact on American society, but also affects literary creation to a certain extent. As an important 9 / 11 novel, John Updike's terrorist tells the story of a native American teenager, Ahmed, who became a terrorist after being excluded from mainstream society and bewitched by religious extremists. Ahmed has multiple manifestations of the other: race, religion and terrorist identity. The combination of the three makes Ahmed completely become a different "other", struggling to find identity in the cultural gap, eager to find a sense of belonging. By analyzing all kinds of setbacks and disappointments experienced by Ahmed in the process of growing up, combining with his concrete behavior, this paper explores his growth track, and expounds the profound influence of ethnic origin and religion on his becoming a terrorist from the perspective of psychological evolution, so as to reveal the uniqueness of Updike's novel creation. Different from those authors who strongly criticize terrorism in his works, Updike, with the help of Ahmed's growth, combined with the connotation and influence of Islam, focuses on the subtle changes of the protagonist's thought from a relatively objective angle of view, and finally achieves the purpose of criticizing the mainstream American society by describing "the other" and caring for the "other". The work evokes reflection on the mistreatment of ethnic minorities in American society and urges mainstream society to abandon prejudices and unite to eliminate terrorism. The works pay attention to the inner heart of the characters, exquisite emotional description, detailed and profound description of the situation of Islam and Muslims in American society, and provide readers with sufficient imagination and interpretation space.
