[Abstract]:The rabbit series published by John Updike has always been the focus of attention in the field of Updike research. By describing the daily life of the American middle class, his works reflect the living conditions of contemporary Americans. Scholars at home and abroad generally study this series of works as a whole, and pay less attention to each novel. In this paper, the author takes the rabbit's rest as the research object, through the analysis of the daily life and mental state of the characters in the novel. It shows the fear of death, addiction to junk food and drugs, and confusion about their identity in the American society where consumer culture prevailed in the 1980s, thus further revealing their state of existence. The main body of this paper is divided into three chapters, respectively, from three different angles to reveal the impact of consumer culture on people's daily life and living state. The first chapter mainly discusses the death consciousness of the protagonist and its close relationship with consumer culture in Rabbit's rest, thus revealing the important influence of consumer culture on American attitude to death. The second chapter, based on the characters' addiction to food and drugs in Rabbit, reveals the cultural connotations behind this phenomenon. That is, consumer culture has an important impact on personal life and reflects the living conditions of contemporary Americans. The third chapter mainly discusses the identity confusion of the characters in Rabbit's rest and further analyzes the main causes of the identity confusion: the cultural contradiction in contemporary American society dominated by consumer culture. On the basis of three chapters' analysis, the paper concludes that Updike's "Rabbit's rest" reveals that the American society in the 1980s appeared to be rich in material resources and prosperous in an economic school. People suffer from the lack of traditional values caused by the plight of survival. Belief crisis, identity crisis and inner emptiness, spiritual loneliness and alienation. In the face of this dilemma, people paralyze themselves through excessive consumption of food, drugs and other items, ease their inner fear and fill the inner emptiness. To sum up, this paper analyzes the living conditions of the characters in John Updike's Rabbit. It reveals the spiritual life of American in the society dominated by consumer culture in the 1980's and the living predicament caused by it.
