《苔丝》人物话语的人际意义分析

人际意义一词来源于韩礼德关于系统功能语法中语言三大元功能的研究。根据韩礼德的观点,作为三大元功能之一的人际功能表示说话者在交际时用语言表达自己的态度,动机,地位和亲疏关系,以及对事物的推断等功能。它主要研究语言是如何建立和保持交际双方的人际关系,韩礼德将语言这种能够反映说话人之间的本质关系的意义定义为“人际意义”。在日常生活或社交活动中,人们不仅用语言传递信息,还用语言同他人交往,从而建立和保持一定的社会关系。 本文尝试以韩礼德系统功能语法中关于人际意义的理论为基础及其他语言学家对人际意义的补充,主要从语气、情态、时态三个方面,对小说《苔丝》人物话语的人际意义进行分析,旨在揭示人物对待彼此的态度,推断他们的关系及其性格特征。以期通过语言层面的分析,说明对话语人际意义的分析有助于人物的解读与作品的理解。 回顾此前的研究,发现对小说《苔丝》的研究主要局限于文学翻译和文学批评方面,而忽略了对其语言的人际方面的研究。因此,本文尝试从系统功能语法下的人际功能角度研究该作品。研究发现:首先,从语气角度分析人物话语同样也可以证明亚力克与苔丝之间是迫害与被迫害的关系。亚力克利用自己的雇主身份和社会权势诱奸了单纯的苔丝。其次,通过对语气与情态的综合分析发现德比夫人与苔丝之间是支配与被支配的关系。苔丝总是表现出对母亲的顺从。最后,通过对情态与时态的综合分析则揭示了人物对待彼此的态度和情感的变化。安吉尔对待苔丝的态度转变十分明显:由婚前的热情,真诚呵护到婚后的冷漠,被动应对。而苔丝对安吉尔的情感至始至终都未曾改变。上述研究发现人物的关系,情感,心理和态度等特征可以通过语气,情态和时态在语言上的选择体现出来。 本研究证实了系统功能语法用于分析小说《苔丝》的可行性,从而丰富了对该作品的研究。希望本文对文学作品的应用和语言教学方面有所裨益。
