中美语言学博士论文的元话语研究
[Abstract]:Meta-discourse guides readers to read texts and establishes the relationship between authors and readers. In recent decades, meta-discourse has attracted more and more attention. Many studies have examined the use of meta-discourse in academic writing. However, the introduction is a neglected field, and few scholars have investigated the similarities and differences between native English speakers and non-native speakers. In order to fill these deficiencies, this study, based on Hyland's (2005) classification model of meta discourse, makes a contrastive analysis of the use of meta discourse in the introduction of the Ph. D. thesis of Chinese and American Linguistics. In this study, the "introduction" of 56 doctoral theses of 25 universities in China and the United States is selected as the corpus to explore the general characteristics of the Chinese and meta discourse in the "introduction" of the doctoral thesis of China and the United States. And the similarities and differences in the use of communicative meta-discourse and interactive meta-discourse. The results show that communicative meta-discourse is more than interactive meta-discourse. Comparing the introduction of Chinese and American papers, we find that there is no significant difference in the number of transitional markers and verbal markers. However, in the "introduction" of the American thesis, the six kinds of meta-discourse, such as index notation, code-annotation, vagueness, reinforcement, self-proclaimed language and interventional marker, are significantly more. The qualitative analysis shows that the function of communicative meta-discourse is similar, but the expression form is different. Similar situations occur in the use of interactive meta-discourse. The above results indicate that in the introduction of the Ph. D. thesis in Chinese and American linguistics, the communicative function of meta-discourse is used more frequently. In addition, due to the differences in social culture, the structure of the introduction and the author's English proficiency, the number of meta-discourse in the "introduction" of American papers is more numerous and the forms of expression are more abundant. In view of the importance of meta-discourse to the writing of papers, teachers should explore the use of effective teaching methods to help students learn meta discourse. Students should be exposed to more international academic papers and be familiar with the lexical meaning and usage of English meta-discourse. In addition, more attention should be paid to the author's writing ability during the evaluation process.
