论李提摩太对《西游记》的诠译

【摘要】： 晚清基督新教传教士李提摩太(Timothy Richard)曾对晚清中国耶佛对话做出过重要贡献。他是当时极少数对中国佛教做出正面评价的传教士之一，除精研佛法外，还对中国佛经及佛教文学进行了严肃系统的翻译。但是，由于受到宗教对话成全模式的影响，李氏依然坚持基督教信仰具有绝对的优越性，而将佛教视为基督教在亚洲的表达式，与之相呼应的是他在具体的翻译实践中采用了“援佛入耶”的翻译策略，，尝试以基督教思想诠释佛教。本文选取李提摩太唯一的一部文学译著《西游记》(英文名为《出使天国》)作为研究对象，分别在译本的结构、人物塑造和归化翻译上着重用力，力图揭示出李氏“援佛入耶”策略的具体应用及效果。在这一过程中，李氏的许多基督教观点也一一展现出来，使我们能够正确认识他对《西游记》理解和翻译。本文正文共分三章。第一章从理解的历史性出发，对李提摩太翻译《西游记》历史背景进行梳理，将他对佛教的理解放置到晚清耶佛对话、成全模式的宗教对话、本色化的传教策略等具体的历史语境中来考察；第二章从翻译的目的性出发，考察李氏对《西游记》的整体认识，包括他翻译《西游记》的原因和他对《西游记》作者的误认。第三章则是从译文文本出发，从结构到内容具体分析李氏对小说《西游记》的翻译以及使用的翻译策略。
[Abstract]:Timothy Richard, a Protestant Christian missionary in the late Qing Dynasty, was one of the few missionaries who made positive comments on Chinese Buddhism. Chinese Buddhist scriptures and Buddhist literature have also been translated in a serious and systematic manner. However, because of the influence of the model of religious dialogue, Li's adherence to the Christian faith has absolute superiority. Buddhism is regarded as the expression of Christianity in Asia, which is echoed by his translation strategy of "helping Buddha to enter Ye" in his specific translation practice. This paper chooses Li Timothy's only literary translation of Journey to the West (English name of "the Kingdom of Mission") as the object of study, focusing on the structure of the translation, characterization and domestication of the translation, respectively. This paper tries to reveal the concrete application and effect of Li's "aiding Buddha into Ye" strategy. In this process, many of Li's Christian views are also revealed one by one, so that we can correctly understand his understanding and translation of Journey to the West. The text of this paper is divided into three chapters. The first chapter combs the historical background of Li Timothy's translation of Journey to the West and puts his understanding of Buddhism into the dialogue of Yephav in the late Qing Dynasty. The second chapter examines Li's overall understanding of Journey to the West from the perspective of the purpose of translation. The third chapter analyzes Li's translation of the novel Journey to the West and his translation strategies from the perspective of structure and content.
