从翻译适应选择论看葛浩文英译《呼兰河传》

【摘要】：葛浩文是美国著名的中国现当代文学学者和翻译家,辛勤耕耘三十余载,他已经是中国现当代文学作品的“首席翻译家”。他半生从事于汉语言学习、教学与研究,对中国现当代文学有着深厚情结与深刻的见解。长久以来,他致力于中国文学,尤其是中国现当代小说的翻译。杰出的双语能力和和双文化背景使他的译本深受美国读者喜爱,也屡获大奖。他的译作不仅为他个人赢得了国际声誉,还为中国文学的对外传播做出了巨大贡献。然而在国内,对他的研究近几年才逐渐多起来,且相对局限,大多集中在《红高粱》、《狼图腾》、《浮躁》等这样几个作品的译本。对于其翻译的萧红的作品,研究的学者更是屈指可数。事实上,葛浩文对萧红感情深厚,称其为“隔世恋人”。他的博士论文写得是《萧红评传》,这部著作成为萧红文学研究不可多得的资料,他对于萧红的研究和翻译不仅提高了萧红在国外的知名度,也带动了国内学者的“萧红热”。翻译界经历文化转向后,翻译研究走向更加多元化的发展,译者也不再隐形,译者主体作用的重要性日渐凸显,在此背景下,胡庚申提出翻译适应选择论。这一理论以“译者为中心”,提出翻译的实质就是“译者适应翻译生态环境的选择活动”。本文试图从翻译适应选择论的视角探讨葛浩文在英译萧红的小说《呼兰河传》的过程中,在其所处的翻译生态环境中做出的适应与选择。本文认为,葛浩文所处的翻译生态环境大体包括两个部分：原文／原语呈现出来的世界,主要包括原文风格、写作手法、中国特别是东北地区的民俗文化等,以及译语／译文世界,主要包括目标读者、目的语文化、西方社会对小说的现有界定和期盼,以及当时西方世界对中国现当代小说译介的空缺等。本文拟解决两个主要问题,一是葛浩文如何能适应当时的翻译生态环境,成为《呼兰河传》英译本的不二人选。二是译者在翻译过程中如何从语言、文化和交际维度作出适应性选择转换。研究发现,在译前阶段,由于葛浩文对中国现当代小说浓厚的兴趣,他对萧红的“情结”,他本人因生活际遇而拥有的双语双文化能力,以及20世纪70年代美国对现当代中国小说研究和翻译的极大空缺等多种因素,使得他有意愿也有能力适应当时的翻译生态环境而成为这部小说的译者。在翻译过程中,葛浩文在研究与理解了原文／原语世界的基础上,主要对译语／译文呈现出来的世界进行适应,翻译手法倾向于归化以满足目标读者和西方主流世界的期待,这都是译者为提高译本在读者群中“生存”的可能性而有意为之的策略。笔者认为,本文的研究内容将对萧红作品外译乃至中国现当代文学作品的外译有所启示,同时,本文对于研究葛浩文的翻译思想及其早期翻译特点有一定贡献。从理论上来说,本研究也可以作为个案证明翻译适应选择论的可行性及对翻译实践活动的解释力,希望能对中国本土理论发展做出一定贡献。
[Abstract]:He is a famous Chinese literary scholar and translator in the United States . He has worked hard for more than 30 years . He has been a " chief translator " of Chinese contemporary literary works . He has devoted himself to Chinese literature , especially the translation of contemporary Chinese literature .

This paper tries to explore the adaptation and choice of the translator ' s subjectivity in the translation of Xiao Hong ' s novel , which mainly includes the target reader , the target language culture , the western society ' s existing definition and expectation of the novel , and the vacancy in the translation of the contemporary Chinese novel in the Western world .

This paper intends to solve two major problems , one is how Ge Hao - wen can adapt to the translation ecological environment at the time , and become the second choice for the translation of the English version of the modern Chinese novel . In the process of translation , he has the ability to adapt to the contemporary Chinese novel and the great vacancy of translation .

The author thinks that the research content of this paper will bring inspiration to the translation of Xiao Hong ' s works and the translation of contemporary Chinese literary works . At the same time , this paper will make some contribution to the study of the translation thought and the characteristics of the early translation of Ge Hao - wen . In theory , this study can also serve as a case to prove the feasibility of the theory of translation adaptation and the explanation of translation practice activities , and hope that it can make a certain contribution to the development of Chinese native theory .
