[Abstract]:According to E. The relevance Theory proposed by Gert and its application in translation practice, this paper interprets the cognitive reasoning process of metaphorical translation with examples, and concludes four common strategies of metaphorical translation. Relevance theory provides a new perspective for translation studies in China. It holds that translation is an act of verbal communication and the process of translation is an ostensive-inferential process of interlingual interpretation of the source language. As a pragmatic translation theory with strong explanatory power, relevance theory can also be used to guide metaphorical translation. From the perspective of relevance theory, metaphor is a speech act that indirectly presents the speaker's thought. Therefore, the translation of metaphor is a special communicative act, which must undergo a series of processes, such as understanding, analyzing, inferring and finding the corresponding body of the target. In the process, under the guidance of relevance principle, the translator should make pragmatic inference according to the author's communicative intention and the readers' cognitive context, find out the best relevance, and then adopt appropriate translation strategies to reconstruct the metaphor of the original text. In order to achieve successful translation, the target readers and the original readers can react to the same metaphorical information in the same way. In this study, Thackeray's novel Vanity Fair and its two Chinese translations are studied, and the translation of metaphors in Vanity Fair is examined under the framework of relevance Theory. This paper probes into the cognitive reasoning process of the translator in translating some metaphors in the novel, and compares and evaluates the translation strategies adopted by the two translators for the same metaphor. It is hoped that this paper can make a reasonable explanation for the translation of metaphors in English literary works and make some contributions to the translation of metaphors in Vanity Fair.
