[Abstract]:Alice Walker is an American black novelist, poet, and essayist. In her work, she focuses on the process of black women seeking themselves. In her masterpiece, Purple, Walker molded a woman who was troubled by words, Celia, the novel tells of her transformation from "silence" to "sound", from being dominated by others, defining to having the ability to construct her identity. As a black woman, Celia, oppressed by racial and gender discourse, has been in a state of aphasia. She has no capacity or right to speak out about her own experiences. Her identity is determined by white discourse and male discourse. By portraying the image of Celia, Walker aims to reveal the importance of the right to speak in the construction of identity. At the end of the novel, Celia succeeded in making her own voice. In this paper, Foucault's discourse right theory is used as the framework to study the process of the hostess's search for her own voice and identity. This thesis is divided into the following three parts:. The introduction briefly introduces the important literary status of Alice Walker, and then summarizes the research status of Purple, and leads to the topic and theoretical support of this paper. The text is divided into three chapters:. The first chapter analyzes that under the dual suppression of racial discourse and gender discourse Celie is deeply suppressed and her voice is deprived. Therefore she has no ability to make her own voice and construct her own identity. The second chapter analyzes that Celia has never realized the importance of the right to speak, and begins the process of self-expression. Sophia and Sarge are black women who have the courage to resist the oppression of white discourse and male discourse. They live independently. From them, Celia saw the power of words and began to awaken and express herself. The third chapter analyzes Shelly's pursuit of self-voice and the process of self-identity construction. Celia sends out her own voice by writing a letter to herself, thus gaining the right to speak and getting rid of racial discourse. The oppression of gender discourse, the recognition of themselves, the establishment of their own as a mature, independent, self-confident female identity. Finally, this paper draws the following conclusions: the right to speak is closely related to the construction of personal identity, and plays an important role in the construction of self identity.
