[Abstract]:Joseph Conrad is regarded as one of the most outstanding novelists in English literature. He has a special interest in journey narration, and in his works he is obsessed with describing all kinds of journeys, such as overseas expeditions, drifters, imperialist explorations, pilgrimages, and so on, and can even say that his novels take the journey of the characters as the structure of the story. The development of plot, the shaping of characters and the expression of purport are closely related to the journey of characters. Therefore, journey narration is an important theme in Conrad's works. Conrad's love of journey narration is closely related to his rich travel experience. This paper discusses Conrad's "Spring", "Heart of Darkness" and "Lord Jim" from the perspective of journey narration. It is believed that the journey of the protagonists in these three novels represents the classical journey mode created by Conrad under the guidance of his artistic creation thought and is consistent with Conrad's own life course. This paper attempts to explore the relationship between the journey and the world in the selected text from the perspective of journey narration. At the same time, it probes into the mode, artistic characteristics and theme implication of the journey narration in Conrad's novels. The paper consists of six parts, each of which is listed below. The first part introduces the research situation of Conrad at home and abroad, and then the purpose, scope and method of the research. Chapter one discusses the embodiment of journey narration in Conrad's novels. First, it traces the origin of journey narration in western literature, and then concretely describes the concrete embodiment of journey narrative in Conrad's works. The second chapter examines the specific embodiment of journey narration in Youth. This paper probes into the narrative mode of the journey in this work, classifies it as a pilgrimage to youth, and presents a tribute to the pursuit of the individual in the world. Chapter three explores the narration of the journey in Heart of Darkness, and concludes that the journey in the novel was initially sacred, but in the end, the traveller's initial pursuit was abandoned. The fourth chapter examines the two journeys of Jim, the protagonist of Lord Jim, that is, the adventure of knighthood at sea and the moral quest in the jungle. Jim's instinctive leap and the decision to release Brown herald the failure of his quest to find a way to live in the world. After consulting a great deal of literature and examining the selected works, this paper argues that the journey in Conrad's works is a process in which individuals figure out where they are in this world. The process of finding a way to live in the world gives these journeys a sense of pursuit. This kind of pursuit makes the models of these fictional journeys fit perfectly with Conrad's own journey path of life and his thoughts of literary creation and art.
