寻求和谐—论《霍华德庄园》中福斯特的矛盾女性观

【摘要】：福斯特是二十世纪初英国著名小说家之一,他一生共出版了六部小说,其中《霍华德庄园》因其晦涩的主题‘唯有联结’而最受争议。本文通过对比分析该小说的整体结构及其人物刻画以探究福斯特基于“联结观”的女性主义意识。福斯特所处的特定的生活环境使他产生了对女性的关怀及对和谐社会的渴望,而他的这一思想充分地体现在了他的杰作《霍华德庄园》的主题“唯有联结”上。《霍华德庄园》是关于两大观念上对立的家族—威尔考克斯和施莱格尔之间的纠葛的故事。与男权社会的拥护者威尔考克斯家族截然不同,施莱格尔两姐妹—玛格丽特和海伦则以典型的新型女性形象展现在我们面前,她们有着热切的女性主义追求。小说突出了两姐妹与威尔考克斯家族的冲突和对抗,同时,玛格丽特与海伦两姐妹之间也进行了鲜明的对比刻画。同为新女性的两姐妹踏上了不同的女性主义道路,表现出两大主流女性主义派别的典型特征。福斯特通过对她们的对比刻画,进一步向读者表露了他对女性主义的看法。有着极端女性主义者典型特征的海伦背弃了和谐理念并最终为其极端的行为付出了惨重代价。而玛格丽特则走的是“中庸之道”,体现出她的保守而矛盾的女性主义观念：一方面迎合了男权社会主流意识,表现出对男权的屈从；另一方面却又不懈追求女性自由解放,展现出新型女性的反叛形象。也正是玛格丽特这一矛盾形象最终成功地实现了两性的“联结”,成为了小说中理想的新女性形象的化身。通过塑造玛格丽特这一矛盾的新女性形象,福斯特向我们充分地展现了他的和谐女性观。
[Abstract]:Foster was one of the famous British novelists in the early 20th century. He published six novels in his life. By comparing the whole structure of the novel and its characterization, this paper explores Foster's feminist consciousness based on the concept of connection. Forster's special living environment gave rise to his concern for women and his desire for a harmonious society. And his thought is fully embodied in the theme of "only connection" in his masterpiece, Howard Abbey. < Howard Abbey > is the story of two opposing families, Wilcox and Schlegel. Unlike the Wilcox family, the patriarchs of the patriarchal society, the two sisters Marguerite and Helen presented themselves in the face of a typical new female image, and they had a keen feminist pursuit. The novel highlights the conflict and confrontation between the two sisters and the Wilcox family. The two sisters who are new women set foot on different ways of feminism, showing the typical characteristics of the two mainstream feminism schools. Foster expresses his view of feminism to readers by comparing them. Helen, with the typical characteristics of extreme feminists, turned her back on the idea of harmony and finally paid a heavy price for her extreme behavior. On the other hand, Marguerite followed the "mean way", which embodied her conservative and contradictory feminist ideas: on the one hand, she pandered to the mainstream consciousness of the patriarchal society and showed subordination to male power; on the other hand, she unremittingly pursued the free emancipation of women. Showing a new type of women's image of rebellion. It is the contradictory image of Marguerite that successfully realizes the "connection" of the two sexes and becomes the embodiment of the ideal new female image in the novel. By portraying Marguerite as a contradictory new female image, Foster fully demonstrates his harmonious view of women to us.
