小说《他们的眼睛望着上帝》可以从两个层面来解读——女性自我实现的征程和一种文化自我肯定的征程。小说通过女主人公珍妮把这两个层面结合在了一起。珍妮在自己的文化中找到了自我实现的力量源泉,从而也证明了这种文化的力量与魅力所在。虽然小说对女性和文化的关注使作者赫斯顿受到了其同时代作家的排斥,在她逝世的二十四年后,艾丽斯·沃克的女性主义定义给了她一个强有力的回应。女性主义者对自我的肯定与热爱,对全人类的人文关怀在小说中得到了很好的体现。 本文对《他们的眼睛望着上帝》的解读主要是从女性主义的这两个特点入手,分三个方面来阐述。论文的第一部分着重分析作者在文中所表现的对待性别和种族的态度,第二、第三部分分别通过作者对非洲文化中话语力量和布鲁斯元素的应用,来阐述作者对黑人及美国黑人文化的肯定。 赫斯顿在《他们的眼睛望着上帝》所表现出的对自我的肯定,对他人的包容为沃克的女性主义定义提供了一个很好的注解,同时也为读者提供了一个看待世界的新视角。
