符号价值视角下的《嘉丽妹妹》分析

【摘要】:西奥多·德莱赛是20世纪美国文学历史上一位杰出的自然主义作家。他的代表作《嘉丽妹妹》讲述了女主人公嘉丽从一位身无分文的乡村少女变成上流社会名媛的故事。在追逐自己梦想的过程中,嘉丽虽然获得了财富,地位和声誉,但却没有获得真正的快乐。《嘉丽妹妹》创作于1900年,此时正值美国消费文化蓬勃崛起之时,人们被“消费即快乐”,“我消费,故我在”的消费价值理念所感染,并被形形色色的商品所包围;而商品又被赋予了各种符号价值,人们所购买和消费的并不是商品本身,而是能够彰显个人财富和社会地位的符号价值。因此在不知不觉中,人们投身到了符号消费之中。在小说《嘉丽妹妹》中,西奥多·德莱赛为我们展示了消费社会的方方面面。人们通过消费来满足自身的心理需求,同时消费也变成了一种生活方式。它鼓励消费至上,诱导人们进行炫耀性消费,展示人们的消费和购买能力。此时,对符号的占有代替了对物的占有,成为身份认同的主要根据和较高生活品质的象征。在符号消费的影响下,亲情、友情和爱情都无不例外地被烙上了消费关系的印记,之前友好亲密的爱已经不复存在。人们之间的关系转变成一种商品市场上的交换关系,以实现其“符号价值”。本文从鲍德里亚的符号价值理论出发,以《嘉丽妹妹》为文本,对小说中的消费行为、场景以及人物进行解读,试图挖掘符号价值在该小说中的体现,从而揭示符号价值在当代社会的真实写照。从符号价值的视角分析《嘉丽妹妹》,本文可以得出以下结论:符号消费已经成为当代社会一种主要的生活方式,人们用炫耀式的购买力彰显自己的财富和地位以获得他人的尊重;明星在变成时尚引导者的同时,也变成了商品的代言人,以吸引观众的眼球以及激发其购买欲望,从而促进商品的大规模消费。
[Abstract]:In 20th century, Theodore Dreiser was an outstanding naturalist writer in the history of American literature. His masterpiece, Sister Carrie, tells of the heroine Carrie's transformation from a penniless country girl to an upper-class socialite. In the pursuit of their dreams, Although Carrie has acquired wealth, status and reputation, she has not been truly happy. Sister Carrie was written in 1900 at a time when consumer culture in the United States was booming, and people were called "consumption is happiness," "I consume," So I was infected by the concept of "consumer value" and surrounded by a variety of commodities, and commodities were given symbolic values, and what people bought and consumed was not the goods themselves. But the symbolic value of personal wealth and social status. Thus, unwittingly, people throw themselves into symbolic consumption. In the novel Sister Carrie, Theodore Dreiser shows us all aspects of consumer society. People consume to meet their own psychological needs, and consumption becomes a way of life. It encourages consumption first and induces conspicuous consumption. Display people's consumption and purchasing ability. At this time, the possession of symbols replaces the possession of things, and becomes the main basis of identity and the symbol of higher quality of life. Friendship and love have been branded with the stamp of a consumer relationship, before the friendly and intimate love no longer exists. The relationship between people into a commodity market exchange relationship, Based on Baudrillard's theory of symbolic value, this paper interprets the consumption behavior, scene and characters in the novel in order to find out the embodiment of symbolic value in the novel. In order to reveal the real portrayal of symbolic value in contemporary society. From the perspective of symbolic value, this paper can draw the following conclusions: symbol consumption has become a major way of life in contemporary society. People use their ostentatious purchasing power to show their wealth and status in order to gain the respect of others, and stars become fashion leaders as well as spokesmen of goods to attract the audience's attention and stimulate their desire to buy. Thus promoting the large-scale consumption of commodities.
