现代性与美国性—《革命之路》中惠勒夫妇焦虑的文化解读

焦虑在美国二十世纪中叶的文学作品中,已经成为显性的陈述。美国作家理查德·耶茨（Richard Yates,1926-1992）被誉为“焦虑时代的伟大作家”,其作品集中反映出二十世纪中后期美国人民的孤独失意及生存困境。耶茨的处女作《革命之路》于1961年出版,并获得美国国家图书奖提名。《革命之路》的主人公弗兰克·惠勒和爱波·惠勒是美国焦虑年代中饱受焦虑折磨的典型美国人。非巧合地,被誉为“美国存在心理学之父”的罗洛·梅（Rollo May,1909-1994）和耶茨生活在同一时代,罗洛·梅深刻洞察现代人的焦虑并指出个人焦虑情境受制于他的文化标准与价值。罗洛·梅著有《焦虑的意义》（TheMeaning of Anxiety）《人的自我寻求》（Man’s Search for Himself）等,形成关于焦虑的系统理论。本文运用罗洛·梅的焦虑理论以及语境化的方法,从文化视角来解读惠勒夫妇的焦虑,揭示出现代性和美国性是导致惠勒夫妇焦虑产生的两大因素。本文首先聚焦文本中惠勒夫妇焦虑的表现以及应对焦虑的方法。面对乏味的郊区生活和虚假的社区成员,惠勒夫妇陷入了孤独,进而失去了归属感;同时,面对生活的巨...
