《荆棘之城》的空间研究

【摘要】：萨拉·沃特斯是英国当代重要的作家,曾被评选为当代“20位当代英国最优秀小说家”之一,其作品广受关注和好评。《荆棘之城》作为其维多利亚三部曲之一,讲述了苏和莫德因相互欺骗,相互纠缠于爱与欲望之间的爱情故事。以往研究者多从女性主义,新维多利亚研究,叙事研究和空间研究的角度对《荆棘之城》进行解读。受先前研究的启发,本文从空间的角度切入,对《荆棘之城》进行研究。论文运用空间批评理论对文本进行深入的探讨,同时对小说中的空间以及空间所承载的意义进行了细致的分析。论文从三个方面对空间进行了研究。第一章通过对该小说中的物理空间,即小说场景中兰特大街,疯人院及荆棘庄园的分析,得出不同的空间分别反映了不同的社会现实。其中,兰特大街是工业文明中贫民窟的缩影,疯人院成为女性的牢笼,荆棘庄园见证了传统贵族的没落。这些空间对小说人物的行为产生了一定的影响。第二章分析了小说人物的精神空间,指出精神空间是与人的主观活动相关的。以小说主人公对自我的认同为切入点,分析了人物的心理发展,得出自我认同能够通过满足人生不同的阶段的心理需求和获得自我身份来实现。第三章从维多利亚时期的社会背景和关系两个方面来分析小说的社会空间。结合维多利亚时期的史实和小说文本分析了小说的社会背景。同时也阐述了在男权社会中,女性所处的不平等经济地位造成了女性在某些领域上或者某些地理空间里的位置缺失。论文最后得出结论,在该小说中,小说人物会受到特定的物理空间和社会空间的影响,并产生不同的精神空间。这三个空间共同作用,塑造了小说的角色。对《荆棘之城》中空间研究,丰富了小说的欣赏视角并激发了对空间理论的关注。
[Abstract]:Sala Waters is one of the most important contemporary British writers, and was named one of the 20 best contemporary British novelists, and his work has received wide attention and praise. "the City of thorns" is one of the Victorian trilogy. This article tells the love story of Su He Maude who is entangled in love and desire because of mutual deception. In the past, researchers interpreted the City of thorns from the perspectives of feminism, New Victorian Studies, narrative Studies and Space Studies. Inspired by previous studies, this paper cuts into the perspective of space. This paper makes a thorough study of the text by using the theory of space criticism and makes a detailed analysis of the space in the novel as well as the significance of the space. The first chapter analyzes the physical space in the novel, that is, the Rand Avenue, the madhouse and the thornbush estate in the novel scene. Different spaces reflect different social realities. Among them, Rand Avenue is a microcosm of the slums of industrial civilization, and the madhouse becomes a cage for women. Thorn Manor witnessed the decline of the traditional aristocrats. These spaces had a certain impact on the behavior of the characters in the novel. The second chapter analyzes the mental space of the characters in the novel, points out that the spiritual space is related to the subjective activities of human beings, and analyzes the psychological development of the characters with the self-identity of the protagonists as the starting point. It is concluded that self-identity can be achieved by satisfying the psychological needs of different stages of life and obtaining self-identity. The third chapter analyzes the social space of the novel from two aspects: the social background and the relationship of the Victorian period, and analyzes the social background of the novel in combination with the historical facts of the Victorian period and the text of the novel. At the same time, it also expounds the social background of the novel in the patriarchal society. The unequal economic status of women results in a lack of position in certain fields or in some geographical spaces. Finally, the paper concludes that in the novel, the characters of the novel will be influenced by specific physical space and social space, and will produce different spiritual space. The study of space in the City of thorns enriches the angle of appreciation of the novel and arouses the attention to the theory of space.
