[Abstract]:The study of imagery began to rise in ancient times. In poetry, image is one of the most important features. So what is "image"? How can imagery play an irreplaceable role in poetry? At present, many scholars devote themselves to image research. At the same time, the study of poetic imagery has been expanded into the field of aesthetics by scholars, which is a progress. Of course, scholars have also studied imagery and poetic imagery from the perspectives of philosophy, psychology and linguistics. From the perspective of relevance theory, this paper studies poetic imagery, especially Emily Dickinson's poetic imagery. Generally speaking, the understanding of poetic imagery is inseparable from the full understanding of the poetic context and the background of the poet's creation. From the perspective of relevance theory, such an image comprehension activity from readers to poets can be regarded as a communicative activity. The poet is like a speaker, the reader is a listener, and the poet uses his poetry to convey their emotional and informational intention, and then the reader uses their knowledge background and cognitive ability to infer the implied meaning of their poetry-the communicative intention. The two can resonate in emotion and information, so we say they reflect each other. However, everyone's understanding and resonance of poetry and poetic imagery are different. In order to achieve the best understanding of the reader, the reader must make an effective effort to find the best connection of poetry and poetic image, that is, the beauty of poetic image. That is to say, readers need to collect and reorganize the old and new information when appreciating a poem, so as to realize the image beauty of this poem. Then such a complete social activity will be completed. This paper makes a case study of Emily Dickinson's poetic images, especially in her natural poems, love poems, death poems and religious poems. Based on relevance theory, The author tries to explain how to use the general idea of poetry and the background of poetry creation (implicit premise) to taste the beauty of poetry image (the best contextual effect): the description of natural image reflects the author's love for nature. The description of the image of love reflects the author's desire for love and the rebellious spirit of the male-dominated world, and the description of the image of death reflects the author's fearless spirit of facing death. Finally, through the description of religious images, the author's attitude towards God and truth is reflected. Her poems embody the artistic conception of "beauty is truth, truth is beauty", as she wrote in her own poem: 鈥
