[Abstract]:Shackles of Human Nature is one of the important masterpieces of Maugham's study of human nature. The work reflects Maugham's outlook on life and his observation and understanding of human nature. Through the careful depiction of Philip, the central character, especially the deep analysis of the activities of the inner world, the novel objectively describes the protagonist's exploration of the meaning of life, and discusses calmly the possibility that modern people can break away from all kinds of spiritual shackles. At the beginning of the twentieth century, people's ideology in western society began to undergo great changes. People's traditional ideas and values began to change. The origin of species and the development of science and technology have shocked the understanding of human self. World War I and the Great Depression disillusioned modern ideals. Under the influence of nihilism and Schopenhauer pessimism, the feelings of world-weariness began to be confused. All this has deeply influenced people's minds. This paper studies Maugham's important work the shackles of Human Nature and interprets the painful struggle of complex human nature in all kinds of shackles from different angles. The protagonist Philip, in the process of exploring the meaning of life and trying to break away from the shackles of human nature, does not succeed in breaking these shackles, but finally dissolves them in meaningless nothingness. On the basis of the deepening understanding of human nature, Maugham explores the freedom of human nature and breaking away from all kinds of spiritual shackles. The author's ultimate wish is to present the existence of a real life.
