[Abstract]:Jane Reese is one of the most famous female writers in England. Most of her works were written between the 1930 s and 1960 s. She is concerned about groups of women from marginalized societies and their identity-seeking process. Because of her special life experience in the West Indies and abroad, Reese's novels are mostly in Paris or London, and the characters have the West Indies background. She describes mainly the exploitation of women in male societies and the resulting low economic status and the role men impose on them. In order to awaken the existence of women as a group in society, the boundless Sea of algae is one of Reese's masterpieces and is regarded as the prequel of Jane Eyre. Since its publication, the Sea of algae has been widely read and highly praised by many critics. It makes the silent Bertha in Jane Eyre sound and become the vivid white Creole girl Antoinette in the novel. The unique scenery of the West Indies described by Reese deeply attracts the readers, and the heroine's unusual life experience and identity crisis also make the reader moved. With the help of post-colonialism, this paper deeply analyzes the causes of the heroine's identity crisis, explores the process of identity and finally finds the successful experience of finding her unique self. This thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter introduces the writer Reese's life experience, his works and the theory of post-colonialism. The second chapter analyzes the three main causes of the heroine's identity crisis: ethnic conflict, gender oppression and discrimination brought about by Eurocentrism. Chapter three discusses the process of the heroine's seeking identity: the failure of trying to blend into the black / white world, the swing of the inner world, and the success of the self. The fourth chapter is the conclusion of this paper, including the main findings of this paper, the limitations of the study and suggestions for further research.
