林语堂编译《论语》研究

【摘要】：对林语堂翻译理论与实践的研究是翻译界研究的热点之一。迄今为止主要的成果集中在二十世纪九十年代以来对林语堂翻译理论的基本论述、林语堂翻译实践活动的总结以及对个别中国古典文学英译的研究上。其中在译本研究方面,以对《浮生六记》英译本研究最多。这些研究大多关注文化差异的可译性、翻译文本的语言分析和译者翻译策略的选择等方面的问题,而对于林语堂翻译生涯中最重要的贡献——将诸多中国经典文化形象通俗化地译介到西方鲜有谈及。本文旨在对林语堂编译的儒家经典著作《论语》从译者翻译策略以及孔子文化形象塑造方面进行研究。林语堂采取编译的形式将这一中国儒家经典形象通俗化地译介到西方。自二十世纪七十年代发展起来的以目的语/文化为导向的翻译理论为重新评估林语堂的编译思想及作品提供了理论依据。目的语/文化翻译理论着重在描述翻译活动同译入语文化之间的交互作用。该理论尤其注重翻译活动对译入语文化的影响,以及以译入语文化的读者接受度为衡量译文是否成功的标准,而非传统语言学译论中以译文忠实度为翻译标准。这一理论恰好适用于解读林语堂的编译活动。林语堂对《论语》的重新选材很慎重。林语堂深知英文读者的需要以及西方文明所缺少的中国古典的人文情怀,在其编译《论语》过程中,他选取能表现孔子幽默,大度,富于智慧的章节,竭力塑造一个摒弃了中国传统文化中封建教条主义桎梏的新孔子。林语堂的对《论语》原文的重新选材与重新分章编排体现了他作为中国传统文化的审视者和对外传播者,在对传统文化的进行批判的同时参照西方文化对传统文化进行了选择。林语堂的编译作品在西方读者中受到广泛欢迎。他的翻译策略和编译思想促进了东西方文化的融合与交流,对我国古典文学翻译作品的通俗化传播具有很强的启示性。
[Abstract]:The study of Lin Yutang translation theory and practice is one of the hot topics in translation field. So far, the main achievements have been focused on the basic exposition of Lin Yutang translation theory since the 1990s, the summary of Lin Yutang translation practice and the research on the translation of individual Chinese classical literature into English. In the aspect of translation study, the English version of "six chapters of floating Life" is the most widely studied. Most of these studies focus on the translatability of cultural differences, the linguistic analysis of translated texts and the choice of translators' translation strategies. However, the most important contribution to Lin Yutang's translation career is to generalize the images of Chinese classical culture to the West. The purpose of this paper is to study Lin Yutang's Confucian classic, Analects of Confucius, in terms of translation strategies and cultural images of Confucius. Lin Yutang translated this image of Chinese Confucian classics into the West in the form of compilation. The target language / culture-oriented translation theory developed in the 1970s provides a theoretical basis for reassessing Lin Yutang's translation ideas and works. The target / cultural translation theory focuses on the interaction between translation activities and the target culture. This theory pays particular attention to the influence of translation activities on the culture of the target language and the readership of the target culture as the criterion to judge the success of the target text, rather than the faithfulness of the target text in the traditional linguistic translation theory. This theory is suitable for interpreting the compilation activities of Lin Yutang. Lin Yutang is very cautious about the reselection of the Analects of Confucius. Lin Yutang is well aware of the needs of English readers and the lack of Chinese classical humanism in Western civilization. In the process of compiling the Analects of Confucius, he chooses chapters that show Confucius' humor, magnanimity, and wisdom. Strive to shape a new Confucius who abandoned the shackles of feudal dogmatism in Chinese traditional culture. Lin Yutang's reselection of the Analects of Confucius and the rearrangement of chapters reflect his choice of traditional culture as an examiner and a communicator of Chinese traditional culture while criticizing the traditional culture as well as referring to the western culture. Lin Yutang's compiled works are widely welcomed by Western readers. His translation strategies and translation ideas have promoted the integration and communication of eastern and western cultures, and have a strong enlightenment to the popularization of translated works of classical literature in China.
