[Abstract]:The issue of women was one of the major cultural issues in the Victorian era and the first half of the twentieth century in the United States. George Eliot and Vera Cather are two leading novelists in the history of English literature, heralding a new era of women's writing. As women writers, they pay great attention to the fate of women and regard women's issues as the starting point of writing. In their most autobiographical novels the Mill on the Flores and my Antonia Eliot and Cather call for improving the situation of women and fighting the deep-rooted prejudices against them. At a time when they lived in their own countries, traditional notions of women were being challenged and bills were being prepared to reform the status of women. This paper consists of six parts. The first part is an introduction about women's issues in history and the achievements of Eliot and Cather in the history of women's literature. The second part briefly discusses feminist literary criticism methods and reviews of the two writers. The third part focuses on women's issues in the historical and cultural reality of Eliot and Cather's life. This part is divided into two levels: Victorian British women's living conditions, the early twentieth century transitional period of American women's survival. The fourth part expounds the comparison of women's issues in the two novels. It focuses on women's self and society, women and education, occupation and economy, love and marriage. Through the detailed comparison and analysis of Eliot and Cather's deep thinking on women's issues, the author aims to explore their transcendence and limitations and their enlightening significance to reality. The fifth part discusses women writers and writing about women's experience. It consists of three levels: women's experience and women's writing, the consistency and divergence between characters and writers, and their contribution to women's literature. It is an indisputable fact that under the rule of powerful patriarchal discourse, women have long been silent and suffering from aphasia. Therefore, women's writing implies the subversive power of women overthrowing patriarchal cultural rule. In this sense, the great, influential Elliott and Cather opened the way for the women who followed them. The conclusion part compares Eliot and Cather's thinking on women's issues and analyzes the reasons of their similarities and differences. The conclusion is that women's issues are not just women's issues, because the establishment of a harmonious society requires the participation of both sexes.
