[Abstract]:Compliment is a kind of politeness that occurs frequently in people's daily communication and can be found in all languages and cultures. Compliment is a lubricant in interpersonal communication, which helps to maintain a harmonious and friendly atmosphere and promote the maintenance and sublimation of interpersonal relationship. As a reappearance of real life on the big screen, film contains a lot of compliments. According to the principles of cooperation, politeness and speech act theory, this paper collects hundreds of praises from 16 Chinese and American films, from the perspective of topic selection and response strategies. Semantic and syntactic patterns analyze how Chinese and American people give and receive compliments, and the similarities and differences between Chinese and American cultures hidden in this linguistic behavior. The results show that Chinese and American speech acts of praise have many similarities and different emphases. Chinese people can be regarded as conceited or ill-bred if they accept praise from each other. Americans are used to accepting compliments because they think they are sincere and should accept them politely. The topic of American compliments is mainly about appearance and possession, while the topic of Chinese compliments is mainly on achievement and ability. In terms of semantics and syntax, Chinese compliments are more flexible in expression and tend to be more stylized than American compliments. In response strategy, Chinese compliments mainly adopt indirect ways such as shifting topic and answering questions, while American compliments' response strategies are mainly acceptance and return. Through the study of the compliments contained in Chinese and American films, this paper finds that there are differences between them in many aspects, reflecting their different cultural connotations and values. The study of the differences in compliments between China and the United States and the cultural phenomena of their responses will help people better understand the compliments of the two countries and thus effectively improve their intercultural communicative competence.
