《美国牧歌》一部伦理悲剧
[Abstract]:Philip Ross is one of the most prolific American Jewish writers. His masterpiece American Shepherd, the first of the American trilogy, was completed in 1997 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1998. The novel depicts the life of four generations of Jewish immigrants, Seymour Lviv, in the United States. Because of the great differences between generations, four generations have completely different life experiences in the United States. Through this work, Philip Ross presents a detailed and vivid picture of the Jewish immigrants' existence in the United States. As one of his classic works, American Shepherd has attracted the attention and controversy of scholars since its publication. Foreign scholars mainly study the works from the aspects of identity and writing skills. The domestic scholars mainly focus on the theme of "American Dream", and this article uses the method of literary ethics criticism. This paper attempts to explore the ethical dilemma and tragic fate of the protagonist Lviv in American Shepherd and points out that the novel is essentially a tragedy reflecting the ethical problems of American Jews. This paper consists of three parts: introduction, text and conclusion. The introduction introduces Philip Ross and his literary career, summarizes the research status of American Shepherd at home and abroad, and puts forward the research methods and contents of this paper. The main body is divided into three chapters: the first chapter discusses the protagonist Lviv and her daughter Melly, who are lost in the ethical dilemma of identity crisis after being hit by both body and soul, and the confusion of identity eventually leads to their tragic fate. The second chapter mainly discusses that Lviv suffered from family ethics dilemma, the incest desire of her daughter Melly, and the ethical crisis of marriage and father and son aggravated their identity problems, which are the important reasons for his ethical tragedy. The third chapter mainly analyzes the ethical dilemma of the Lviv family's religious belief crisis. After the Vietnam War and the anti-cultural movement, the racial conflicts in the United States intensified. In such an ethical environment, the change of the protagonist's religious beliefs made him completely lose himself, and finally showed an ethical tragedy of American Jews. The conclusion part explains the ethical dilemma of the protagonist Lviv from the three angles of identity, family and the ethical crisis of religious belief, and explores the ethical tragedy of the protagonist in American Shepherd and its profound ethical connotation. Secondly, the thesis aims to analyze the ethical problems in the works in order to bring enlightenment to modern social life.
