[Abstract]:Virginia Woolf is one of the outstanding modernist novelists in England and has made great contributions to the development of modern literature in literary creation and criticism. In her lifetime of creative practice, she published a large number of novels, short stories, essays, biographies, diaries and letters. From the perspectives of feminist criticism, narratology criticism and psychoanalysis, many scholars have explored various ideological themes in Woolf's novels, analyzed the characters in the novels and explored the narrative art in the novels. In recent years, under the influence of "space turn" in the field of humanities and social sciences, Woolf's space problem in his novels has begun to attract the attention of the critics. However, it is rare to study Woolf's novels from the angle of spatial narration. Based on the theory of "spatial narrative", this paper explores the spatial types, techniques of spatial narration and the deep reasons for the formation of spatial narration in Woolf's novels. It is worth noting that the concept of "space" discussed here is not confined to physical space, but also takes into account social, cultural and psychological factors. This thesis is divided into five parts: the first chapter briefly introduces Virginia Woolf and his works, literary space narrative theory, and the purpose and significance of this thesis. The second chapter mainly discusses three types of space in Woolf's novels. First of all, the physical space of Woolf's characters' activities has typical geographical characteristics of cities and regions, such as London, India, lighthouse and so on. Secondly, the author discusses the social and cultural space in Woolf's novels. The novel "Lady Dalloway" reflects the characters' inability to violate social norms, the novel "to the Lighthouse" reflects the disharmony between the sexes, and the novel "waves" describes the different attitudes of the characters towards life and death. Finally, the author introduces the expansion of psychological space in Woolf's novels. In the novel Lady Dalloway, Mrs. Dalloway's desire for power far outweighs her desire for freedom and love; in the novel to the Lighthouse, the characters yearn for eternal love. In the novel waves, the characters fight loneliness and alienation in their own way. The third chapter concludes that the use of space narrative techniques is the key to the success of space narration. The flexible techniques in Woolf's novels discussed in this thesis mainly include juxtaposition and perspective. Juxtaposition includes the juxtaposition of the story, the juxtaposition of the narrative time and the juxtaposition of the characters. The fourth chapter summarizes the deep reasons for the formation of Virginia Woolf's novel space narrative. The first is to seek the value of self existence, the second is to realize the freedom of mental space under the bondage of reality, and the last is to pursue harmony and order in chaos. The fifth chapter is the conclusion of this paper. This paper uses the theory of spatial narration to interpret Woolf's novels, which will help to further understand the characteristics of Woolf's novels and modern novels, as well as the understanding of spatial narration. And to study the close relationship between space and theme in modern novels.
