[Abstract]:Philip Ross is one of the most important Jewish writers in contemporary America. He has exerted a profound and significant influence on American literature. American Shepherd is one of the American trilogy, and it is also the fifth novel of Nathan Zuckerman series. It earned Ross the Pulitzer Prize in 1998. Some critics regard it as the most thoughtful of all their works. This paper analyzes Philip Ross's American Pastoral songs from the perspective of neo-realism. The novel is mainly about the life history of four generations of Jews in the United States. In different social backgrounds, their understanding of the society at that time is different. Between family and mainstream culture, they face double contradictions and puzzles. This paper interprets American Pastoral songs from the perspective of neo-realism, which is divided into three chapters. The first chapter discusses the national theme of neo-realism reflected in American Shepherd. From the ethnic generation gap, the betrayal of family feelings and alienation of human nature and other aspects to be analyzed. The second chapter analyzes the typical characters in the novel of New realism embodied in American Shepherd. By subtly describing the tragedy of the characters, the loss of morality, and the typical characters in the historical context, Ross reflects the psychological impact that contemporary Jews face in the melting pot of American culture. And the plight of the alien people in the gap. The third chapter mainly discusses the artistic characteristics of the novel. "American Shepherd" absorbs the artistic characteristics of post-modernism literature creation, and at the same time, draws lessons from the artistic expression of mythological reconstruction in modernism literature works, and reconstructs the Garden of Eden. The Noumenon meaning of human existence is explored from the unique history and mythological tradition of the Jewish nation. The conclusion points out that the definition of neo-realism in American literary circles is not very clear at present, but it does not affect us to use the basic characteristics of neo-realism to evaluate the outstanding literary works with more realistic tendency at the present stage. A neo-realistic interpretation of the Jewish writer Philip Ross's later work, American Shepherd, is such an attempt. Reading and analyzing the national theme, characters and artistic features of the novel from the perspective of neo-realism can make the American Shepherd get a more fair evaluation. At the same time, such interpretation will also help to deepen the readers' understanding of neo-realism.
