[Abstract]:Vera Cather, a famous American writer in the first half of the 20th century, is famous for her expertise in depicting the frontier life in the western United States. < aah, Pioneer!'is Cather's first mature frontier novel and a classic to establish her literary status. In contrast to the weak and dependent female images in some traditional literary works, Alexandra is independent, resolute and successful in her career, and has a large number of outstanding male qualities. However, this novel is not only a praises of the heroine's indomitable pioneering spirit, but also a record of the heroine's unremitting pursuit of perfect and harmonious personality. In this paper, the author analyzes Alexandra, the heroine by using the theory of "androgyny", and discusses the exploration of the female identity of the heroine during the pioneering process, and finally realizes the harmonious coexistence of the masculine and feminine characteristics, that is, to realize the androgyny. This thesis consists of six parts: introduction, four chapters and conclusions. The first part is the introduction, briefly introduces the life of Vera Cather, and then summarizes the achievements of the domestic and foreign research on "Ah, Pioneer!" In the first chapter, the author collates the basic theories and viewpoints, especially the views of "gender fixation" and "bisexual identity", in order to provide better theoretical support for the following text analysis. The second chapter expounds the heroine Alexandra's valuable male characteristics and explores the reasons for the full development of Alexandra's male characteristics. The third chapter analyzes the heroine's pursuit of the perfect and harmonious androgynous personality and the exploration process of the female identity. The creation of Alexandra's own perfect and harmonious personality can be divided into three stages: the stage of exclusive female trait, the stage of incomplete restoration of female trait, and the stage of bisexual identity. The author expounds in detail the heroine's character defects in the first two stages of her personality development and the heavy cost she pays for the uneven development of her male and female characteristics. Therefore, it proves the profound significance of pursuing the dual-sex harmonious personality model from the opposite side. In the last stage, the heroine fully identifies with her female identity and finally reaches the ideal state of androgyny. Chapter four discusses the positive influence of androgyny on the real life of heroine. The androgynous personality pattern helps the heroine to succeed in her career, to be respected in society and to be happy in marriage. It also helps her to achieve unity and harmony with the real world, including the harmony between nature and culture and between different cultures. The conclusion emphasizes the main idea of the thesis again and points out the social practical significance of pursuing androgyny.
