[Abstract]:This paper is guided by psychoanalysis and trauma theory, from witnessing violence, Castration anxiety and identity misplacement explore the inner struggle and survival dilemma of the white chief executive in John Maxwell Cutcher's waiting Barbarians during his moral awakening. The purpose is to enrich and broaden the space of trauma theory in the interpretation of the novel. This paper concludes that in the process of getting rid of the historical disgrace and making up for the historical evil, the chief executive can not completely shake off the control of the colonial empire consciousness, nor can he gain the recognition of the colonized barbarians. As a result, he ultimately failed to seek his identity and was unable to recover from the trauma. In addition, the novel is a metaphor for the experience of the Chief Executive not only as a personal trauma, but also as a collective trauma to white South Africans living in a particular historical and cultural context. It is not easy for whites in South Africa to make peace with blacks and get out of their wounds.
