[Abstract]:Patrick White, a famous writer, is widely regarded as the founder of modern Australian literature. His works are famous for reflecting the complexity of the modern world and the serious crisis of human spiritual life. One of his masterpieces, the Tree of Man, won him international fame for the first time. Many scholars and critics pay attention to the rising star. Numerous monographs and papers at home and abroad have studied his works from different aspects, such as his literary value, religious views, sexual attitudes and so on. Then, according to the author's investigation, few people from the narrative point of view to explore this work. Among them, White's extensive use of fables and symbols in the Tree of Man is particularly striking. Therefore, this thesis attempts to explore the fables and symbols used in the Tree of Man. Through these fables and symbols, readers can better understand the writer's writing intention and realize the significance of the work. Based on symbolism and Benjamin's fable theory, this paper analyzes the Tree of Man from five parts. Firstly, this paper gives a general introduction to Patrick White and his work the Tree of Man. It explains in detail the important role this work plays in the development of Australian literature. This part also briefly combs the domestic and foreign research on this work. The second part defines fable and symbolism, and briefly introduces the history of fable theory and symbolism. At the same time, it analyzes the profound influence of western culture on White's writing. In the third part, the author explores the basic characteristics of modern fables in Man Tree on the basis of reading the text carefully. Firstly, the novel environment and the fable writing of characters embody the redemption of modern fable theory. Secondly, the detailed description of the story background in the novel corresponds to the real historical situation and shows the truth of the fable. Thirdly, this paper analyzes the fragmentary features of fables from two aspects, that is, the ruins of the world and the characters full of contradictions. Fourth, the melancholy features of the fable are revealed by a large number of detailed descriptions in the novel text. Finally, the interpretation of various themes of the novel shows that the Tree of Man is a successful fable. The fourth part analyzes the symbolism in the novel. The transcendence of symbolism is mainly embodied in White's use of Bible archetypes. The totality of symbolism is reflected in the description of the relationship between man and God in the novel. In addition, this paper summarizes two symbolic structures. One is Paradise-depravity-suffering-mandala. The other is about the narrative structure of the silver cardamom eraser, "get-lose-get back." The last part is the summary. After careful analysis of the text by using modern fable theory and symbolism, the author affirms the innovation in narrative techniques of White's masterpiece, the Tree of Man.
