[Abstract]:In his epic the Underground World, Don Delillo uncovers a period of Cold War history obscured by mainstream discourse and constructs a variety of "Underground World". Among them, the Harlem, the South Bronx and the American West during the Cold War are the heterogeneous spaces in American society. Based on Foucault's theory of heterogeneous space and Lefeyvoll's theory of space, this paper discusses the construction of these marginalized spaces and the social problems implied by them in the light of the historical background of the Cold War. This paper focuses on the Harlem community and explores the segregation of African-Americans in the Cold War period by interpreting the black marginalization reflected in the spatial practice of African-Americans and the disregard of black people by white ruling discourse. It also points out that the black collective and individual struggle in the novel shows the African American resistance to apartheid and the demand for equality during the Cold War. Secondly, this study discusses the existence of the underclass in the South Bronx community in the tide of consumerism. In the consumerist society of the United States, this space is reduced to a garbage dump, and the people living at the bottom of it are also reduced to social garbage and isolated by the outside world. At the same time, the thesis points out that the graffiti art and charity activities of the characters are isolated against the outside world and show the dignity of the lower class. Finally, the article discusses a large number of military bases established by the US government in the name of national security in the western region during the Cold War, especially the nuclear test base, which brings serious threat to the safety of the local residents. And through the demonstration, it shows that Matt's departure and Clark's desert art creation are, to some extent, resistance and deconstruction to the militarization of the West. It expresses Delillo's criticism of the nuclear position secrecy policy of the American government and the non-justice of the nuclear arms race at that time. By interpreting these marginal spaces, this paper points out that the heterogeneous spaces constructed by Derrero reveal the living conditions of the marginal people in the American society during the Cold War, and show the themes of dignity and freedom. At the same time, it expresses Derrero's antagonism to various oppressive forces and his deep humanistic concern for the marginal people.
