[Abstract]:This paper describes the relationship between the translation activities of vernacular Chinese and the development of modern Chinese by analyzing the controversy between translation criteria and the vernacular movement published in the May 4th Movement of New Youth and New Fashion. The vernacular movement during the May 4th Movement played an important role in the development of modern Chinese. At the same time, many translators began to use vernacular as the target language for literary translation, while scholars, such as Fu Sinian and Liu Bannong, thought that Western languages could make up for the shortcomings of Chinese. This makes the vernacular writings of the May 4th Movement show the characteristics of "Europeanization". Modern scholars, such as Wang Li, Lv Shuxiang and Wang Ke, have discussed the linguistic characteristics of this period, but have not described the causes of this phenomenon in depth. This paper focuses on describing the scholars' expectations for translation activities at that time, explores the factors behind the features of "Europeanization" of vernacular writing during the May 4th Movement, and shows more clearly the relationship between the translation activities of vernacular Chinese and the development of modern Chinese. As two influential magazines at that time, "New Youth" and "New trend" became the important stage of the vernacular movement, and faithfully recorded a large number of scholars' arguments about the vernacular movement and their expectations for translation activities. Through the analysis of these materials, the author finds that, first of all, many scholars and translators in the May 4th Movement wanted to learn from the western language to transform the Chinese language. On the one hand, they hope to set an example for vernacular and vernacular literature by means of literal translation, on the other hand, they hope to enrich the expressive ability of vernacular by borrowing words, grammar and syntax from western languages. Secondly, scholars in the May 4th period expected that translation activities could promote the vernacular language movement in the following aspects. First, to expand the vocabulary of Chinese by borrowing western words; second, to enrich the ability and means of expression in Chinese by learning from the syntax of western languages; third, to set an example for vernacular literature by translating classical western literature; On the other hand, through the dissemination of vernacular literature, the social and cultural status of vernacular writing was consolidated. Fourthly, the system of paragraph forms and symbols in western literary works was widely used in vernacular writing. Thirdly, the vernacular language of this period is regarded as an elite language, which is difficult to be popularized. The later discussion on popular language was a reflection and revision of the vernacular movement during the May 4th Movement. The significance of this paper is to review the translation activities and the vernacular movement by analyzing the materials in New Youth and New Fashion, and then to find out the motivation of translation activities and the role it played in the vernacular movement.
